BRINDRIL Salt Formation Drilling Fluid Technology

BRINDRIL Salt Formation Drilling Fluid Technology

Salt formation drilling fluid is specifically designed for drilling in complex formations that contain high salinity salt formations, such as halite and gypsum. This drilling fluid system, developed through the careful selection of special formulations and additives, effectively addresses challenges posed by high salinity, hardness, and solubility issues prevalent in salt formations, ensuring safe and efficient drilling operations.

Features

  1. Strong Salt Contamination Resistance: Incorporates a variety of organic and inorganic additives that resist salt and calcium contamination, maintaining the stability of the drilling fluid properties against intrusion from salt formations.

  2. High-Temperature Stability: Exhibits excellent thermal stability suitable for high-temperature conditions commonly encountered when drilling through salt formations,      keeping the drilling fluid's basic properties unchanged.

  3. Superior Inhibition: Effectively inhibits hydration expansion and dispersion of shale formations, reducing the risk of borehole instability and bit sticking.

  4. Optimal Rheological Properties: Through careful formulation and dosage optimization, the drilling fluid maintains suitable rheological parameters and structural strength for easy pumping and cutting transport.

Advantages

  1. Increased Drilling Efficiency: Reduces issues like bit sticking and borehole instability, thus improving drilling speed and efficiency.

  2. Reduced Drilling Risks: By inhibiting the hydration and dispersion of shale, it decreases the occurrence of complex situations and accidents during drilling.

  3. Simplified Maintenance: With stable performance, this drilling fluid system requires relatively simple  maintenance, reducing workload and costs associated with drilling      operations.

Applications

  1. Salt Formations: Primarily targets formations where salt or gypsum is predominant, characterized by high salinity, hardness, and solubility.

  2. Complex Formations: Used in composite formations with salt formations that also include sandstone, shale, mudstone, and varying pressure and temperature conditions.

  3. High-Temperature, High-Pressure Wells: Possesses excellent thermal stability and resistance to extreme conditions, ensuring safe and efficient drilling operations.

  4. Unstable Boreholes: In formations where salt dissolution and expansion disrupt borehole stability, the fluid’s inhibition and borehole-wall support minimize collapse and sticking risks.

  5. Pollution Resistance: With strong resistance against salt contamination, it maintains stable fluid properties by preventing salt intrusion from salt formations.

Widely applied in drilling operations within high salinity salt-containing complex formations, this fluid system effectively mitigates various salt formation challenges, ensuring safe and efficient drilling. Additionally, it has broad applicability in high-temperature, high-pressure environments such as deep and ultra-deep wells.

Complementary Additives

  • BRINVIS Rheology Modifier: Key additive that adjusts the fluid's rheology, enhancing drilling efficiency and safety.

  • POLYPAC Filtrate Reducer

Key Additive: BRINVIS Rheology Modifier

BRINVIS Rheology Modifier is a crucial additive within the BRINDRIL salt formation drilling fluid technology. It aims to improve drilling efficiency and safety by adjusting the fluid’s rheology, utilizing unique chemical and physical properties suited to the complex environments encountered in salt formation drilling.

Functions:

  1. Adjusts Rheological Properties: Modifies viscosity, shear strength, and other parameters to better adapt to various drilling conditions, enhancing suspension and transport capabilities.

  2. Enhances Borehole Cleaning: Optimizes fluid flow patterns, improving borehole cleaning and reducing cuttings accumulation, thereby lowering stuck pipe risks.

  3. Stabilizes Borehole Walls: Helps form stable filter cakes in complex salt formation formations, preventing wall collapse and fluid loss.

Applicable Range:

  1. Temperature: Effective up to 150°C, with high thermal resistance.

  2. System: Widely used in BRINDRIL salt formation drilling fluid systems, especially where controlling rheology and improving borehole cleaning are critical.

Case Study

The Missan oil fields, located in southeastern Iraq near the Iranian border, present significant challenges due to the presence of thick salt formations, which contain over 80% minerals like rock salt and anhydrite. During drilling, conventional problems such as bit balled-up, frequent pipe sticking, and borehole collapse were encountered, largely due to the salt formation's plastic flow and instability.

Two systems—a regular high-density (2.30g/cm³) composite saline drilling fluid and an ultra-high-density (2.60g/cm³) system—were successfully applied in the Missan fields. These systems exhibited excellent heat resistance, contamination resistance, and inhibition capabilities, fulfilling site drilling needs. The use of composite saline as saturated brine effectively curtailed rock salt dissolution, with dissolution rates below 5%, thereby significantly reducing collapse risks. The ultra-high-density system achieved a viscosity control around 50mPa·s, accommodating both the salt formation's creep requirements and drilling rheology demands.

These systems met the challenges posed by high-pressure brine formations, frequency of sticking incidents, and other complex situations, demonstrating the significant potential of BRINDRIL technology in challenging oilfield environments.
