ProDRIL Weak Gel Solids-Free Reservoir Drilling Fluid

ProDRIL Weak Gel Solids-Free Reservoir Drilling Fluid

ProDRIL weak gel solids-free reservoir drilling fluid technology is an innovative solution in the petroleum drilling industry. Its core advantage lies in its unique weak gel characteristics and the superior rheological properties derived from them. This technology overcomes the challenges associated with horizontal well drilling under complex geological conditions and significantly reduces reservoir contamination.

Features

  1. Rapid Weak Gel System: ProDRIL drilling fluid leverages the synergistic interactions between polymers to quickly form gels, requiring low gelation temperature and time, facilitating onsite operations.

  2. Unique Rheology: Exhibits high viscosity at low shear rates for efficient suspension and transport of drill cuttings, and reduced viscosity at high shear rates to minimize flow resistance, achieving pseudoplastic fluid behavior.

  3. Efficient Thickening: High viscosity can be achieved even at low concentrations, significantly enhancing the drilling fluid’s sand-carrying capabilities.

  4. Shear Resistance: Maintains stable molecular structure under high shear forces, with viscosity rapidly recovering once the shear is removed.

  5. Reservoir Protection: Forms a mudcake layer containing polymers, effectively reducing the drilling fluid's damage to the reservoir and safeguarding reservoir productivity.

Advantages

  1. Improved Drilling Efficiency: The unique rheological properties reduce cuttings bed formation, lower the risk of pipe sticking, and increase drilling speed.

  2. Enhanced Wellbore Stability: High viscosity characteristics effectively protect the wellbore, preventing erosion by drilling fluids and improving borehole quality.

  3. Significant Reservoir Protection: The formed mudcake effectively blocks solids and fluids from invading the reservoir, reducing contamination and damage.

  4. Environmental Friendliness: The system’s additives are largely biodegradable, meeting marine environmental protection requirements.

  5. System Stability and Pollution  Resistance: Maintains stable performance in various complex drilling environments, resisting interference from multiple contaminants.

Applications

  1. Complex Geological Formations: In geologically complex, fractured, and fault-intersected formations, ProDRIL effectively controls drilling fluid loss, protects wellbore stability, and prevents reservoir contamination.

  2. High Temperature and High Pressure Formations: Retains stable rheological properties under extreme conditions, ensuring effective suspension and transport of drill      cuttings, reducing sticking risk, and minimizing damage to the reservoir.

  3. Sensitive Reservoirs: For water-sensitive and salt-sensitive reservoirs, ProDRIL’s unique formulation minimizes reservoir damage, safeguarding reservoir productivity.

  4. Horizontal and High-Angle  Wells: Prevents cuttings bed formation with high viscosity and excellent sand-carrying capabilities, maintaining clear wellbores in these      configurations.

  5. Long Open-Hole Sections: Provides stable performance and pollution resistance over extended  drilling periods, maintaining fluid stability against various  contaminants.

ProDRIL solids-free drilling fluid has been successfully applied in the Wenchang 13-1 oilfield, a region with complex geological formations and challenging drilling conditions. ProDRIL demonstrated exceptional performance, enhancing drilling efficiency while effectively protecting the reservoir, showcasing its robust potential and value for widespread industry adoption.

Complementary Additives

  • BIOVIS Thickener: Enhances and regulates the viscosity properties of the drilling fluid,  playing a crucial role in the performance of the ProDRIL system.

  • BIOFLO Filtrate Reducer

Key Additive: BIOVIS Thickener

BIOVIS Thickener is a crucial component in the ProDRIL solids-free drilling fluid system, important for adjusting and enhancing the viscosity characteristics of the fluid. BIOVIS's unique physical and chemical properties significantly influence drilling operations.

  2. Applicable Temperatures: Suitable for drilling operations under different temperature conditions, with thermal stability accommodating high-temperature drilling needs.

Case Study

ProDRIL’s rapid weak gel drilling fluid forms weak gel structures quickly, featuring low apparent viscosity and high viscosity at low shear rates to minimize wellbore erosion, stabilize borehole, and protect reservoirs. With attributes like temperature, salt, and shear resistance, low fluid loss, thin and easily removable mud cake, and minimal reservoir damage, it has performed exceptionally well in offshore drilling platforms during drilling and fracturing operations.

In the west of South China Sea’s Wenchang 13-1 oilfield, wells WC13-1-A6, WC13-1-A8, and WC13-1-A3 in the Pearl River Group's second section faced challenges of borehole hydration swelling and stuck pipe risk, with sand bed formation risks in high-angle and horizontal sections. Utilizing the PRODRIL system, all open-hole horizontal sections were safely completed within one month, proving its superior performance.

Performance remained stable with minimal fluctuations during operations. For example, well WC13-1-A3 continuously drilled 135m of shale (2245–2380m) amidst sudden geological changes displaying strong stability and contamination resistance. Drill cuttings were efficiently carried out, avoiding sand bed formation, thus proving its excellent sand-carrying capacity.

Successfully applied to thousands of horizontal wells across various regions, ProDRIL has effectively resolved challenges in drilling long open-hole horizontal wells and accessing oil and gas formations. By maintaining borehole stability, ensuring borehole purification, and protecting oil and gas reservoirs, the system has consistently met or exceeded planned production capacities.
