n  Technical Introduction

    Silicate-based drilling fluid is renowned for stabilizing shale formations, enhancing wellbore integrity, and offering excellent Health, Safety, and Environmental (HSE) performance, positioning it as a robust alternative to oil-based mud in the industry. However, challenges such as poor pH management, fluid loss control, lubricity, and foaming have hindered its widespread application. Building upon the understanding of the mechanism and molecular structure characteristics of silicate-based drilling fluid, we have developed a new-generation silicate drilling fluid system—BorSTAB. This system resolves issues like lubrication and foaming control typical of silicate drilling fluids. Additionally, we've established a real-time monitoring method for effective silicate content and pH value, ensuring precise control of BorSTAB system parameters in the field. With a temperature resistance of up to 170℃, BorSTAB exhibits excellent environmental performance, utilizing non-toxic and biodegradable materials that adhere to national regulatory discharge requirements.

n  Technical Features

    ( 1 )   Strong Inhibition: Achieves up to 98% recovery of aged shale cutting roll and 92% anti-swelling, effectively eliminating wellbore instability and reducing downhole complications.

    ( 2 )   Excellent Lubricity: Exhibits an extreme pressure friction coefficient of less than 0.1, reducing coefficient of friction (COF) in ERD well horizontal sections, thus mitigating wear and damage to drilling strings and tools.

    ( 3 )   Superior Bridging Performance: API fluid loss less than 3mL, HTHP fluid loss less than 8mL, and PPA fluid loss less than 8ml (approximately 0.27 oz), facilitating effective formation bridging, hydrostatic pressure transfer release, and stabilization of well integrity.

    ( 4 )   Thermal Stability: Withstands temperatures of up to 170℃.

    ( 5 )   Environmentally Friendly: All products are crafted from non-toxic and biodegradable materials, ensuring compliance with national regulatory discharge requirements.

n  Application

    The BorSTAB system has been successfully deployed in two wells offshore the South China Sea. In field applications, despite a mud weight 0.1g/cm3 lower than previous cases, no instances of wellbore stability issues or complications such as sticking were observed during drilling operation.
